This MBBS course spans over 9 semesters with each lasting 6 months. After successful completion, students must undergo a mandatory 1-year residential rotating internship. English serves as the medium of instruction throughout the program.

**MBBS Curriculum-Preclinical (Semesters I-IV)**

The initial two years emphasize integrated preclinical Sciences, Community Medicine, Introduction to clinical Medicine, and Medical Informatics. The curriculum includes Anatomy, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, & Physiology, all taught in an integrated manner consolidated with Community Medicine and Introduction to clinical Medicine, providing students with practical clinical knowledge and problem-solving capabilities. Medical Informatics integrates computer knowledge essential for medical education.

Towards the end of the first and second years, university examinations' requirement on the subjects mentioned above is crucial. Mastery of all practical sciences in the first year MBBS must be achieved within three years from the admission date, and within four years for the second year.

Prior to advancement into clinical sciences (Semester V), it is mandatory to pass all preclinical subjects.

**Clinical Sciences [Semester V-IX]**

Clinical studies encompass forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Ophthalmology, ENT Medicine, and various specialized medical and surgical domains. The 3rd-year MBBS contains in Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, and Ophthalmology by the end of the 7th semester. Progression to the 9th sem demands completing and passing all respective subjects. The final MBBS university examinations incorporate Medicine and Allied Subjects, Surgery and Allied Subjects, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and Paediatrics.

Clinical training is conducted at designated Medical Teaching Hospitals and Associated Local hospitals.

**Evaluation**

Continuous assessment via fortnightly tests, semester exams, end-posting evaluations, seminars, and problem-based learning sessions. The continuous evaluation structure has yielded commendable results in university assessments.

## Teaching Methodology

The educational approach in preclinical education includes:

* Lecture sessions in classrooms

* Hands-on experiences

* PBLs/Seminar sessions

* Visits to the community and hospitals

Detailed academic schedules are created every two weeks outlining the topics to be addressed. These schedules are posted well in advance. To enhance the comprehensive learning process, seminars and PBLs are carried out regularly every two weeks, focusing on significant diseases and syndromes. This provides preclinical students with a more profound understanding of the systems being taught. Ongoing assessment is conducted through biweekly assessments, oral examinations, seminars, and PBLs. Formal examinations are held at the conclusion of each 5-month semester. The Clinical Sciences teaching curriculum consists of:

* Traditional classroom lectures

* Clinical/Hands-on training in hospitals, wards, community visits, and field training camps

* Symposia/Seminar sessions

* Clinical meetings/Faculty presentations/Guest Lectures

These teaching sessions amount to an average of forty-two hours per week, with 12 traditional lectures delivered weekly. Emphasis is primarily placed on hands-on clinical training. Students are regularly evaluated through final clinical examinations, mid-semester assessments, and end-of-semester exams.

## Internship

A compulsory one-year rotational internship is required. Six internship schemes approved by Kathmandu University and Nepal Medical Council are available for students from various countries, in accordance with their respective medical council guidelines. Students perform their internships in countries like Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, USA, UK, and South Africa. Internship regulations are subject to change as per the rules of the medical council.
